Kongomani from Rugendo Family

About Kongomani

24 Oct 2008

Kongomani - meaning Congolese - is one of the young male in the Rugendo family - with  Baseka. But he was best friends with Mukunda, whom he looks up to.

Kongomani likes to run round the trees chasing  Lubutu or Baseka, trying to catch them. Kind of like Gorilla Tag!

When the family members were massacred in July 2007 Kongomani took care of Ndeze, his sister, who was not even 1 year old back then. In order to retrieve Ndeze from the group to care for her and prevent her from dying, the Gorilla Doctors had to anesthetize Kongomani.

So Kongomani, like his peers, has had a tremendous shock. The massacre changed the entire family structure – and this will be a struggle for years to come. Ndeze lived in Goma for two years before being moved to the Senkwekwe Centre in 2009.
